Chilean IT spending is expected to return to positive growth territory in 2010 before growing to around U$3.2bn in 2014, from US$2.2bn in 2010. The Chilean IT market is one of the most developed in the Latin American region and, despite current economic headwinds, is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11% over the 2010-2014 period.
There were signs of an improvement in demand conditions in H209 due to restocking following a rundown of inventories. Chile retains some strong IT market fundamentals including consumer affluence and relatively favourable business environment. There could be a boost, particularly in the second half of 2010, from computer hardware tenders delayed from 2009 and the launch of Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system.

Outsourcing providers around the world expect demand for their services to expand rapidly, and are adding staff and investing in new services to meet expected growth, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers survey.
The survey found the industry is transforming due to the emergence of new providers worldwide, as well as existing outsourcers’ efforts to expand into new markets.

BRAZIL: STRONG OUTLOOK
Brazil’s economy, Latin America’s largest, should grow by 5.5 percent this year, Bulltick capital markets estimates.
“Brazil is going to grow strongly in 2010,” Alberto J. Bernal-León, head of research at Bulltick Capital Markets, told the Latin America 2010 conference organized by the University of Miami’s Center for Hemispheric Policy last week. “It will have a very good year.”

The Latin American retail and healthcare sectors are expected to see some of the highest IT outsourcing growth rates this year, thus joining ranks with more traditional consumers such as the financial and government sectors.
Fernando Belfort, an IT analyst for Frost & Sullivan, told BNamericas that retail and healthcare companies have scant knowledge of infrastructure technologies.
The healthcare sector in particular is already used to outsourcing non-essential operations such as cleaning and building security, and the industry is now setting its sights on technology, Belfort said.

A recent report from the management consulting firm A.T. Kearney found that Latin America, and Chile in particular, is becoming an increasingly popular global services destination for multinational companies and third-party service providers. Chile’s stable business environment, talented labor pool and outstanding physical and telecom infrastructure is positioning the country for continued growth in this area.
The report found Chile increasingly gaining interest from North American and European companies looking to serve both English and Spanish speaking clients.

United States President Barack Obama’s State-Of-The-Union Address announcement to slash taxes to American firms to generate jobs in America instead of outsourcing them is likely to create more problems than it solves, both in the US and overseas, analysts say.
The nature of the business will make it difficult to impose tax penalties on US firms that outsource jobs, according to a survey in India by Asia Sentinel of industry officials, independent consultants and financial analysts.

The GDP of the region which fell by 1.8% in 2009 due to the global crisis will resume growth in 2010 with 4.3 %. The region had an annual average growth of 4.8% in the period 2003-2008. In this period, the region enjoyed a current account surplus as well as primary surplus, accumulated foreign exchange reserves, reduced external debts, booming exports and strong macroeconomic fundamentals. This is the strength which helped the region to withstand the global crisis in 2008-9 with only moderate adverse impact and bounce back in 2010.

The trade ministers of an alliance of Latin American Countries (ALBA) will meet today to discuss the operational launch of a regional electronic currency. In last April, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and the leftist leaders of the region agreed to minimize the US dollar dependence by launching a Latin American currency styled in line with the euro.
